Q&A with Sommelier Marcus Gausepohl

I paid a visit to my favorite local Sommelier, Marcus Gausepohl (@marcuswinesalot). Not only is he the Wine Director at Ibiza Food and Wine Bar in mid-town Houston and in my WSET 3 class … he was also recently named one of the “Houston wine experts you need to know” by the Houston Chronicle. So, get to know him a little better, and see some of the magnificent food and wine pairings he suggested during my recent visit to Ibiza. Becca Castillo and Marcus Gausepohl pose in front of the wine collection at Ibiza in Houston

Q: Marcus, what sparked your interest in wine?
A: I was in my early twenties… my girlfriend at the time invited me on a trip to Hungary, where we visited her family’s vineyard. I was inspired by the winemaking experience, winery, viticulture, history, European culture and family heritage. That’s all it took and I was hooked on wine!

Q: Where do you see your wine knowledge taking you? Perhaps a Master of Wine?
A: Hmm, well, the initial plan is to learn as much as I can about the rules and then maybe break a few along the way. Truth is, the best wine is part of an experience.

Q: If you could only drink one wine for the rest of your life, what would that be?
A: Champagne, hands down!

And with that, the wine pairings began with — what else? — champagne. Cheers!
